300 enjoy crisp autumn
night of hay and pumpkins
The sixth annual Monotones' Fall Hayride was held on a very crisp fall Saturday night in October. No clouds were in sight and thousands of stars dotted the Medina sky. Hundreds of gays and lesbians made the journey to Boyert's Farm for this annual event. "The turnout this year seems to be a much better mixture of the community," said one attendee who has been to the last four Hayrides. "It seems to get better each year," she continued.
"We have worked hard to attract both men and women to the Hayride," said John Barrick, project manager for the evening. Kevin Kukoleck, a member of the Hayride committee, commented, "IfI were to make an informal guess about the crowd, I'd say there were about 50 percent men and 50 percent women here tonight... Most of them seem to be single people, too, which is great."
The yearly Fall Hayride is sponsored by Monotones, a social group for gay and lesbian monogamous couples. Monotones has hosted this event yearly since 1987. The first Hayride had less than 30 people. This year had slightly more than 300 "and we could have sold over 500," said Barrick. "But we had a limit from Boyert's. At first, [Boyert's] told us that they could accommodate 300 people. We sold 300 tickets by the Wednesday before the event and we were telling everyone that we were sold out. On Saturday afternoon, the day of the hayride, Boyert's told people who called the farm to come down and they would let them in. Then the night of the event, when they saw how many more people were arriving, they cut off sales at the door. I don't blame them entirely, there was somewhat of a communication problem." Tim,

a Hayride committee member, said, "it was exciting to sell out four or five days before the Hayride, but I feel just awful that people drove all that way and then had to be turned away." Bob, Tim's "other half" and fellow committee member, said "all of us on the committee would like to apologize to those people who couldn't get in."
"The Fall Hayride was a huge success. It went way beyond our expectations," said Barrick. Greg, a committee member, said, "We had many people from out of town this year; Columbus, Dayton, and many from Akron, Canton and Youngstown." When asked about the proceeds, Barrick responded, "much of the money we raise goes back into the community." He said that Monotones is able to be a proud sponsor of the Pride celebration every year in large part because of the money raised at the Fall Hayride. Monotones also contributes to NOCI and the Lesbian-Gay Community Service Center, said David, another Hayride committee member.
"The problem as I see it," said Barrick after a post Hayride committee meeting several weeks later, "is that Mrs. Boyert wants us to stay at 300, so unless we can find another place to hold our event... No, we really don't want to do that, because we have a great working relationship with the Boyert's. Bottom line is that we will sell only 300 tickets next year. That's it."
Although many on the committee expressed an interest in allowing the Hayride to expand, they did come to a unanimous conclusion that the Hayride will remain the same size, and be, as one Hayride goer said the night of the event “one hell of a great time!"
